Title: The Entrepreneurial Economy as a Complex Evolving System

Abstract: Entrepreneurship is a key driver of economic change and development, but is also highly dependent on local conditions that hardly change over time. Understanding the long-term evolution of regional economies necessitates a shift from comparative static analyses to an evolutionary approach that captures entrepreneurial economies as complex evolving systems. Using this complex evolving systems lens we investigate how the regional conditions for entrepreneurship and the prevalence of entrepreneurship change over time and how they are related. We conceptualize the entrepreneurial economy as an entrepreneurial ecosystem, a set of interdependent actors and factors that are governed in such a way that it enables productive entrepreneurship in a particular territory. We develop a new use of complex systems science to analyze interdependence and emergence in the system and to trace the evolution of the system.
