Abstract:

During my time as doctoral researcher, I was part of one of the largest democratically elected representations of doctoral researchers: the Max Planck PhDnet. The PhDnet has a two-decades long history of driving change to improve the working conditions of doctoral researchers in the Max Planck Society. This was, to no small amount, possible because of data-driven arguments, based on the regular surveys the PhDnet conducts.

In this talk, I am going to present insights into the life of doctoral researchers, drawing on the rich findings from the PhDnet’s recent surveys. I am specifically going to focus on the mental health of doctoral researchers and its connection to working conditions, which has emerged as one of the most pressing topics in recent years.
