Abstract:
Resilience denotes the capacity of a system to withstand shocks and the ability to recover from them. But how should it be quantified and measured for complex systems with a large number of degrees of freedom?
Existing concepts of resilience, e.g. in engineering or population biology, do not lead us very far when it comes to highly volatile social organizations. To what extent can disciplinary approaches on robustness, stability and adaptation be applied in a different context? And how should big data analytics be utilized to better estimate the resilience of complex systems?
To discuss such questions requires experts with the ability to cross scientific boundaries.
To bring these people together in a stimulating environment is the aim of the workshop.
Agenda
Day 1:
After a short introduction given by one of the invited participants, each session is devoted to discussing one question.
The aim is to have a discussion document of about five pages to summarize the problems and the outcome of each session.
Session 1
How should resilience be quantified? Is there a context independent metric?
Session 2
Is there a difference between robustness, stability and resilience?
Session 3
What data do we need to measure resilience of real world systems?
Session 4
Can we control systems such that their resilience is maintained?
Day 2:
The working groups will continue to finalize the four discussion documents.
The ultimate aim is to have an edited book which summarizes the state of the art about resilience.
