Fariba Karimi will giva a talk at the SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (DS21), which takes place as a virtual event from May 23 to 27, 2021.

Fariba’s lecture titled “Emergence of Inequality and Bias in Social Networks with Minorities” is part of the session “Modeling Collective Behavior in Human Social Systems” on May 26, 11:40 AM – 1:40 PM (Eastern Time, UTC-4).

Abstract:

Homophily can put minority groups at a disadvantage by restricting their ability to establish connections with a majority group or to access novel information.

In this talk, I show how this phenomenon is manifested in a variety of online and face-to-face social networks and what societal consequences it has on the visibility and ranking of minorities.
