Johannes Sorger about the motivation to do data visualization
This short talk provides an introduction to the field of visualization research. The talk is aimed at general audiences of various backgrounds that are enthusiastic about visualization as a tool to communicate information and that are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the field.
The talk will describe the goals of visualization research, and give insights into the guidelines and methodologies that visualization researchers apply in their work.
On the same day Johannes will give a short panel talk on
“The Visualization Integration Design Space – Dealing with Multifaceted Data”

Data Stories 2018 – the Fifth Edition
Data Stories is an exhibition of research visualizations on social and behavioral scientific topics, done in academia and the private sector.
The fifth edition brings together students, faculty, as well as business representatives to share their work and tools for data analysis & visualization. The project aims to improve collaboration in the academic environment and communication between student talents and future employers. The exhibition generates an open dialogue on substantive social scientific knowledge and technological interests and skills.
Welcoming both print and interactive visualizations, the fifth edition hopes to achieve:
- a wide variety of social and behavioral topics covered
- classic and new tools
- qualitative and quantitative data visualizations
- mapping thought processes and research designs
- dynamic phenomena
