We investigate the connection between academic mobility and thematic portfolios. We looked at authors’ affiliation trajectories across institutions and topics. We examined all articles and reviews in the Dimensions database and used a topic classification based on publications to map the activity of 4,078,913 disambiguated authors.

We show that newcomer researchers are more likely to publish on research topics that are similar to those of their peers who are already at the same institution. This finding suggests that thematic affinity (homophily) or the adoption of topics already developed at the new institutions (adaptation) may influence mobile researchers’ institutional choices.
