About the event:

Rare diseases pose a major challenge to individuals and health-care systems. In Austria, rare diseases affect around 1 in 20 people, with each disorder occurring per definition not more than in one per 2000 people. Simultaneously, the COVID-19 pandemic calls for fast socio-economic measures regarding public health. Focussing research on one specific novel virus with global impact, whilst assuring good care and progress for patients with chronic, rare diseases is crucial. Multidisciplinary collaborations are necessary to navigate through such a crisis.

Key questions of the afternoon: Is the pandemic affecting research, clinical trials and care of patients with chronic disorders, and patients with rare diseases in particular? How are specialists, statisticians and epidemiologists contributing to a fast and reasoned decision making to preserve good care of individuals and public health?
