Falling Walls Lab 2018: Congrats, Ruggiero!

SECOND PLACE FOR RUGGIERO LOSARDO AT THE FALLING WALLS LAB IN VIENNA

Last Friday night the “Radiokulturhaus” in Vienna opened its doors for the third Falling Walls Lab in Austria.

Twelve young scientists from various fields presented their innovative research projects in three minutes pitches to a jury and the public. Amongst them: Ruggiero LoSardo, a PhD of CSH president Stefan Thurner and recurrent guest at the Hub.

„BREAKING THE WALL OF HEALTH CARE DIVIDE“

Ruggiero finds the current trends in the health care system not sustainable: For instance there is inequality in the access to health care between rural and urban areas.

Using a data-driven agent-based model could help, Ruggiero suggests in his short presentation: “By simulating the Austrian health care system we could for instance see how far the system is from collapse in different districts of the country.”

This could support stakeholders in public health and politicians in directing more money and attention to those districts that need it the most.

Ruggiero’s idea convinced the jury and won him a ticket to the next round on the road to Berlin where the annual Falling Walls Conference will take place in November. Before that Ruggiero will try to fascinate the audience of a public voting at the Alpbach conference in August.

FALLING WALLS: KEEP IT SHORT ‘N EASY

The Falling Walls Lab is an initiative set up in 2011 by the Falling Walls Foundation together with global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.

It is “an innovative format for academic institutions to showcase the quality, diversity and passion of their next generation of top researchers,” as the Falling Walls Homepage says. “In 3-minute talks, up to 100 aspiring scientists present their research projects to their peers, the general public and a distinguished jury – promoting ideas and fostering interdisciplinary networks.”
