“Our world is extremely unsafe”

Dec 13, 2017

Shlomo Havlin held a lecture about the interrelatedness and vulnerability of our world

On Monday we welcomed renowned network scientist Shlomo Havlin from Bar-Ilan University (Israel) at the Hub who held an one hour lecture about “Cascading Failures and Recovery in Interacting Networks”.

One of Shlomo’s main conclusions after years of studying networks of networks, be it power grids, the functioning of the human body, or climate change: “Our world is extremely unsafe,” he said.

To a certain point networks rest stable even if some of their links break down. But remove one more link and the change can be dramatic. The network will collapse abruptly, with the “crash” spreading through all the other networks related to it.
